Subject area
VISUAL ARTS: “Resilience Machine”
Educational objective
•Guiding students to discuss the artworks found on the EducArt platform related to the theme of Resilience
•Guiding students to work together to make a machine out of a sculpture incorporating a simple mechanism
Description of activity
Class 1: Once the guidelines, project and EducArt platform have been presented, students study the text related to the theme of Resilience. They then watch the video featuring Christiane Viau. As a group, they discuss the video content. Students complete a heuristic diagram on the theme of Resilience. They answer guiding questions found on the platform in connection with the theme.
Class 2: Students revisit the theme and the works related to it found on the EducArt platform. In smaller groups, students select three works and discuss how resilience is featured in them. The students review all the answers as a group.
Class 3: As a group, students define what a machine is and what it does. In smaller groups, students design a contemporary sculpture that is also a machine. Students consider the possible options for the sculpture’s mechanism, construction and finish. They then watch the video featuring Martin Carli. In smaller groups, students devise a work plan, a sketch and a schematic diagram.
Classes 4 and 5: Students take part in a creative session in the Science and Technology lab. Students use the available tools required to complete the mechanism as designed. Students analyze and dissect how it functions. Students add an aesthetic finish to the sculpture.
Class 6: Students present their projects to the group and share an appreciation of the sculptures.
