Resiliency
War, grief, accident, depression… after having experienced a major stress, some people manage to pick themselves up despite the physical or psychological scars left behind: we say that these people show resilience. Their healing depends as much on the qualities of their own character – courage, creativity, resistance, the ability to adapt, build and construct – as on the support and compassion provided by their community. Although social commitment makes it possible to take care of those affected and to provide them with some balance, certain economic structures, such as co-operatives, and devices, such as a prosthesis, help them to maintain their independence. How do sturdy roots help these individuals – and help us to help others – to stay strong and face life’s many challenges?
