Alterity is recognizing others in their difference. It’s easy: in a portrait, for instance, the fashion, attitude and setting are clues. And as we gaze beyond the image, the conversation deepens. We engage in a dialogue, we expose our identity; there is a meeting. That’s when surprising similarities begin to appear, despite the diversity of gender, origin or social status. The same in some ways and different in others but a single universal truth remains: we are all human. What would a depiction of the person you are today reveal? Can you think of situations in which a dialogue enabled you to see someone in a different light? A surprising before and after?
Like writers Simon Boulerice and Sébastien Harrison, whose texts appear with the works on the timeline, imagine monologues or dialogues that engage the portraits and masks.
