Transactions
Barter, wages, consumption, charity, sponsorship : exchange is integral to living in society and in places like the port, the office, the store, the school… even in the family, like when you are treated to a movie outing as a reward for earning good marks! However, these exchanges are not always equitable. Colonialism and the endless race for profit and wealth have led to serious problems ranging from slavery and child labour to overconsumption and excess debt. How can we promote justice in this area? Could taxes and the regulations governing financial transactions and the stock market reduce inequalities? What role does sharing play in our societies?
